CHAPTER 29

It was a little hard to keep track of all the different principals in our investigation. We had lost Odelia since she wanted to go for a walk, and Chase had also disappeared, taking a call from Uncle Alec, who should have been enjoying a fun time at the beach but still found it necessary to check in with his subordinate. The police detective in charge of the case needed to answer nature’s call and was also out of commission.

And so we decided to go for a little walk ourselves and stretch our legs. That’s when we happened to wander past the king’s chambers and saw how Prince Dane and Prince Urpo entered, wanting to have a word with their dear old dad.

“I would love to be a fly on the wall during that conversation,” said Brutus, which gave me an idea.

“So why don’t we use the trick Ariana has taught us?” I suggested. “By entering these passageways and listening in?”

The problem was that we had no idea how to get to the king’s bedroom, but before long, Ariana herself came tripping up, clearly eager to expand her horizons beyond her human’s sitting room, and gave us a helping paw.

“It’s very easy,” she said after we had explained our predicament. “You simply enter any room, look for a wall panel that gives access to the hidden maze behind the walls, and walk in!”

And to show us how it was done, she entered a room whose door was ajar, tripped up to the nearest wall, and pointed to the little flowers at the bottom. “Press them,” she told me.

“Who, me?” I asked.

“Who else, Max? Just do it, don’t be scared.”

“It’s not a matter of being scared,” I said. “Just that I’m not sure what we will find behind this particular panel.”

“You’re not scared, are you? There’s nothing in those walls that you need to be scared of.”

“Just your average ghost,” Brutus pointed out.

“No ghosts,” Ariana assured us.

“What about mice?” asked Harriet eagerly. She was still considering her bid to become the official royal mouser.

“No mice. Okay, so maybe there might be mice in there,” the Shih Tzu allowed. “But at least no rats.”

“Rats!” said Dooley.

“I said: no rats,” Ariana clarified.

“Just press that flower already, Max,” said Brutus. “If we wait any longer, the conversation will be over.”

And so I pressed that flower. The panel clicked open, and before long, we were inside those walls, following Ariana, who seemed to know her way in there pretty well.

It didn’t take her long to lead us straight into the king’s bedroom, where we hunkered down and listened in—just like a fly on the wall—or a couple of pets inside the wall!

“We need you to tell us once and for all,” said Prince Dane, “who is going to be the next king, Dad.”

“Yeah, Dad,” said Prince Urpo. “You owe it to us to give us clarity. You can’t go around inviting old girlfriends with their bastard sons and implying they have more rights than we do.
